Bat Size Calculator & Certification Guide
Two questions, one page: what size bat fits your player, and which certification stamp is actually legal in your league. Buying the wrong stamp is the expensive mistake — a USSSA bat is illegal in Little League no matter how nice it is.
How to size a bat
Age gets you to the right shelf; height and weight pick the bat off it. Two 11-year-olds can differ by six inches and 25 pounds, and they should not swing the same bat. When a player is between sizes, err shorter and lighter — bat speed beats bat length at every youth level, and a kid who can't control the barrel learns nothing about hitting.
- Length is measured in inches (a "30" is 30 inches long).
- Drop is length minus weight: a 30-inch, 20-ounce bat is a -10 (drop 10). Bigger drop = lighter bat for its length.
- The dugout test: have the player hold the bat straight out to the side, one hand, at shoulder height. If the barrel dips inside 20–30 seconds, it's too heavy.
Bat length by age (starting point)
| Age | Typical length | Typical drop |
|---|---|---|
| 4–6 | 24–26" | -12 to -10 |
| 7–8 | 26–28" | -12 to -10 |
| 9–10 | 28–29" | -12 to -10 |
| 11–12 | 30–31" | -10 to -8 |
| 13–14 | 31–32" | -3 (BBCOR) as of 2026 for 14U; -8 to -5 where lighter bats remain legal |
| 15–18 | 32–33" | -3 (BBCOR) |
Certification stamps by league
| Where you play | Required stamp | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Little League (Tee Ball–Majors) | USA Baseball | USSSA-stamped bats are not legal, regardless of size. |
| Little League Intermediate / Junior / Senior | USA Baseball or BBCOR | Seniors must be BBCOR. Check your division's current rule. |
| USSSA / travel, 13U & below | USSSA 1.15 BPF | USA-stamped bats are usually also allowed but give up performance. |
| 14U (national standard, 2026) | BBCOR (-3) or wood | Changed January 1, 2026 — old drop-8/drop-5 14U bats aged out. |
| High school (NFHS) | BBCOR .50, drop -3 | Or wood. No exceptions. |
Frequently asked questions
What does the drop number actually mean?
Length in inches minus weight in ounces. A 29"/19 oz bat is a -10; a 32"/29 oz bat is a -3. A bigger (more negative) drop means a lighter swing. Young players need big drops to generate bat speed; the standards force smaller drops as players grow so bat performance stays proportional to body strength.
Why can't my kid use their USSSA bat in Little League?
Different performance standards. USSSA's 1.15 BPF standard allows a hotter bat than the USA Baseball standard that Little League adopted. The stamps are not interchangeable in either direction as a legality matter — the league's rulebook decides, and Little League requires the USA stamp through Majors.
What changed for 14U in 2026?
Effective January 1, 2026, the national 14U standard moved to BBCOR (-3) or wood — the same standard as high school. Practically: an eighth grader shopping for a bat should buy BBCOR, both because their 14U events now require it and because it's the bat they'll need for high school tryouts anyway.
Should I buy a size up so it lasts two seasons?
No. An oversized bat costs the player bat speed, contact quality, and confidence for a full season — that's a bad trade for saving one purchase. Youth bats hold resale value; buy the right size now and sell it on.
Does a heavier bat hit the ball farther?
Only if the player can swing it just as fast, which at youth ages they almost never can. Exit velocity is dominated by bat speed. The right bat is the heaviest one that doesn't slow the swing down — which is what the one-hand dugout test approximates.
